There are moments as a photographer where you can feel the energy in a room before you even lift the camera. Photographing Megan’s Nia class at Waimea Yoga Studio was one of those moments.
This special class brought together teachers from Pahoa, Maui, and Seattle, joining Megan and the Waimea Nia community for a morning of movement and connection. The room was filled with laughter, music, and the kind of joy that naturally happens when people are fully present in their bodies.
Nia is a movement practice that blends dance, martial arts, and mindfulness, encouraging participants to move in ways that feel natural and expressive. From the moment the class began, the space transformed into a celebration of movement. Every person in the room brought their own rhythm, personality, and energy.
One of the things I loved most about photographing this class was watching everyone settle into their flow state. There were moments of playful expression, quiet focus, and bursts of laughter as the group moved together across the floor. It felt less like a workout and more like a shared experience.
The natural light pouring through the studio windows and the warm wooden floors made the space feel incredibly inviting. It created the perfect environment to capture authentic moments — people smiling, stretching, dancing, and simply enjoying being part of the community.
As a photographer, I’m always drawn to documenting experiences that bring people together. Movement classes like Nia are full of genuine moments that can’t be staged. They happen naturally when people feel comfortable, joyful, and connected.
This class was a beautiful reminder that photography isn’t just about documenting what something looks like — it’s about capturing how it feels.
Thank you to Megan and the visiting teachers for welcoming me into such a vibrant and uplifting space.
If you host movement classes, workshops, retreats, or community gatherings on the Big Island, I’d love to help capture those moments.
Whether it's dance, yoga, wellness events, or group classes, documenting the energy of these spaces is something I truly enjoy.
